When it Floods, Take Control of the Situation

Flooded living room

To see your favorite room or your house completely flooded with water might as well be counted as one of the worst nightmares. It might be because of a natural calamity or maybe because you forgot to turn off the bath or maybe a small leaking pipe caused all the trouble. Regardless of the circumstances, it is not a pretty sight and some might even go into an instant panic attack at the scene in front of them. After all, it is not easy to see your brand new and very expensive couch swimming in the water. However, getting shocked and panicking won’t help matters. You have to act fast and immediately if you want to make sure that the other things in the room don’t have the same fate as that of your couch.

Causes of Water Damage:

Water damage can be caused due to many reasons such as:

  • A clogged toilet
  • The dishwasher leaking
  • Plumbing leaks
  • Heavy rain
  • Washing Machine malfunction
  • Roof leakage
  • Drainage Failure
  • A water faucet left running

If the water leaking problem is not acknowledged instantly, it could cause major economic damage by ruining the furniture, walls, carpets, rugs, floor (molding) and other things that could be damaged by water.

In case you don’t know what to do when your house or your office is water bound, here’s a guide:

When the Office or Your House is Flooding:

Water can make its way anywhere, even in your office. So, when you see water, don’t wait to think, plan or for the help to arrive; just jump into action. However, the kind of action you need to take is listed below:

  1. Act Smart:

The first thing you need to do is make sure that everyone stays safe and for that, you need to get rid of the electricity current. Walk while staying in touch with wooden surfaces. Locate the power source and turn it off from all the places where the water has flooded. If you see any part of the ceilings that appear to have been weakened or are wilting, steer clear of them. Make sure that the others avoid that spot too. Also, make sure you are not in contact with any electrical device and turn them off if they are functioning.

  1. Find the Source of the Leakage:

It is obvious that the first thing you should do in order to prevent any further damage from occurring is to find the source of the water leakage and turn stop it, if possible. For this, it’s imperative that we know about the location of the water valve. As a precaution, learn about all the fire exits, power sources and the water valves at a place. In case you are unable to do either, call a plumber or any professional who can help with that.

  1. Get Rid of the Water:

Most of the times, the water is clean and might have leaked from a tap or a burst pipe. However, in case the flooding is due to a sewerage leak, feel free to skip this step and call a water damage restoration service to take care of it. But in case of the former, use a wet vacuum cleaner, buckets, blankets, sponges or any fabric that can absorb water. If there is a path for the water to flow out, direct it there by using wipers and other tools.

  1. Remove Items:

Some things cannot be damaged by water so easily. However, other things are more at risk of being damaged at the same time. So, once you have stemmed the flow of the water, remove all the things as quickly as possible. Anything made of wood should be removed; important files and papers, electronic devices, laptops, screens or any electronic system must be safely removed from the water’s reach.

  1. Remove Valuable Items First:

You wouldn’t want your Monte to get ruined in the water now, would you? So, before you take care of other things, take stock of all the valuables and work on removing them first. This includes paintings, cash, jewelry, upholstery and the likes.

  1. Call Professionals and Experts:

The administrative team of the office should have a water damage restoration service in their contacts list. So, as soon as the water breaks out, the first thing they need to do is call them. Meanwhile, all the above-mentioned emergency hacks should be conducted so that the least damage is done to the property and possession.

Make sure that you only take the action when you’re completely sure that it’s safe to be there. If there is any risk of safety, danger or if there is an electric outlet submerged in the water, your sole focus should be to escape the premises first. The other things can be taken care of by the water damage restoration service.
