Tips For Cleaning Grout

Are you disgusted with the grout in your bathroom and kitchen? Tired of experimenting with different chemicals to get rid of the stubborn grout off the tiles? Cleaning grout is one the most difficult tasks when it comes to home cleaning, but you have to do the unpleasant chore because grout not only makes your house look dirty, it also becomes hard to remove when it gets old. So, the best way to keep your tiles clean and shining is to clean the grout as often as it gets dirty.

Although grout cleaning is a tedious task, we can make it easier for you. Here are some easy tips to clean grout and maintain the beauty and hygiene of your kitchen and bathroom:

Prevent grout from getting dirty

Preventing the dirt and stains from accumulating on the grout is the best and easiest way to stay away from the most difficult task of home cleaning and it can be done by following a simple tip.

Take equal amounts of water and vinegar in a spray bottle and keep it in your bathroom/shower area or the kitchen. Spray the mixture on grout lines the last thing you do before going to bed. This can be done daily, but 2 to 3 times a week is enough to save your tiles from the grubby grout.

Home Remedies:

Remedy 1

Make your grout cleaner at home that is not only cheap but also easy to make. You only need two ingredients for making this effective grout cleaner. Yes! Only two ingredients: baking soda and bleach.

Take ¼ cup bleach and ¾ cup baking soda and make a paste by mixing together both the things. Using a tooth brush apply this paste on the grout line and let it do its magic for 5 to 10 minutes.

Scrub the grout with the tooth brush after 10 minutes and leave it for 10 more minutes. Now wash the tiles and let them dry. You will be surprised to see how clean your bathroom or kitchen would look.

Remedy 2

Oxygenated Bleach can do wonders when it comes to eradicating that filthy grout in your kitchen and bathroom. Simply take 2 tablespoons of oxygenated bleach and dissolve it well in two cups of hot water. Generously apply the solution on the grout. Leave it for few minutes and then scrub the grout lines using a bristle brush. You can also dip the bristle brush in the bleach before cleaning to boost its cleaning power. Wash the floor and then dry it with a clean mop.

Important: Make this mixture immediately before using and test it first on a small surface before applying it on the whole floor because oxygenated bleach might discolor some colored grouts.

Remedy 3

  • You will need:
  • Baking Soda (half cup)
  • Vinegar (1/4th cup)
  • Lemon juice (1/3rd cup)
  • Water (7 cups)

Mix together all these things in a spray bottle and spray it on the grout. Leave it for 20-30 minutes. Use a brush to scrub the grout and then wash the tiles with clean water.

Remedy 4

Make a thin paste by dissolving a quarter cup borax and half cup baking soda in hot water and apply it on the grout lines. Leave for some time and then use your elbow grease to scrub it. Wash the tiles with water.

In order to make sure that no residue is left on the tiles, wipe them with white vinegar with the help of a cloth.

Remedy 5

For this highly effective cleaning paste, you will need:

  • Hydrogen Peroxide (1/4th cup)
  • Baking Soda (3/4th cup)
  • Dish Soap (1 Tablespoon)

Make a paste by mixing together all the ingredients in a bowl and apply it on the grout lines with the help of a bristle brush or toothbrush. Allow the paste to do its work for 15 minutes and then wash it off with hot water.

Now take a towel and gently scrub the floor with it to remove any residue and now wash the tiles with water and mop.

Important: Test this mixture first on a small surface before applying it on the whole floor because colored grouts might get damaged due to the bleaching effect.
